In an exciting move aimed at challenging Twitter’s dominance, Mark Zuckerberg recently unveiled Meta’s latest offering, Threads. This companion app to Instagram has already gained significant traction, with 10 million sign-ups within just seven hours of its launch. While the app is designed to facilitate public conversations in real-time, many Instagram employees are hopeful that Threads will eventually replace their arch-rival, Twitter. In this beginner’s guide, we’ll explore what Threads is all about and how you can get started with this innovative platform.
What are Threads?
Threads, developed by Instagram and Meta, is a free app that focuses on enabling text-based conversations in real time. Described as “Instagram’s text-based conversation app,” Threads aims to create an open and friendly space for communities to engage. Currently available for download from Apple’s App Store and Google Play store in the United States, Meta plans to expand its availability to a wider audience in the near future. However, the app’s launch in the European Union is yet to be determined as Meta assesses the implications of the Digital Markets Act, which governs data-sharing practices among large tech companies.

How does Threads compare to Twitter?
Threads share similarities with Twitter in terms of concept and execution. Users can post messages consisting of text, photos, or videos on a scrolling feed, which can be viewed and commented upon by their followers. However, unlike Twitter, Threads currently does not offer a direct messaging feature. Instagram has expressed its willingness to add additional features to Threads based on user feedback. Similar to Instagram, your Threads feed is not limited to only those you follow, although Twitter recently introduced separate feeds for the Following and For You sections.
How do I sign up for Threads?
To use Threads, you must have an existing Instagram account. During the Threads account creation process, you will be prompted to import your profile pictures, bios, and links from your Instagram profile. While you have the option to upload different pictures and information, your Threads username will automatically default to your Instagram username, and there is currently no option to change it. Your Instagram followers will also be directly imported into Threads and verified Instagram accounts will retain their verification status on Threads.
What is the Fediverse?
Threads are part of Meta’s larger vision for the app to integrate with various other apps, collectively referred to as the Fediverse. Fediverse stands for a federated universe of services that share communication protocols, similar to platforms like Mastodon. This integration allows creators and influencers to import their content from other apps instead of starting from scratch with a new profile on each platform. For example, if you build a substantial following on Threads, you can potentially export that following to another app operating on the same technology.

How can I delete my Threads account?
Deleting your Threads account is directly tied to your Instagram account. Unfortunately, you cannot delete your Threads account without also deleting your Instagram account. The privacy policy for Threads explicitly states that while you can deactivate your Threads profile at any time, deleting the profile requires deleting your entire Instagram account. If you choose to deactivate your Threads profile, your posts and interactions will no longer be visible unless you reactivate your profile later. However, please note that all your posts and comments will remain on Threads’ servers unless you manually delete them individually. To reactivate your account, simply sign into Threads using your Instagram account information. Keep in mind that you are allowed only one deactivation per week, so use it wisely. If you decide to delete both your Threads and Instagram profiles, follow the steps below:
- Tap the profile icon on the Threads app’s bottom right-hand corner.
- Next, tap on the two-line menu icon in the top right-hand corner of your profile.
- Select “Deactivate Profile” from the “Account” section.
- Choose “Deactivate Threads Profile” and follow the prompts to confirm your decision.
Getting started with Meta’s Threads app opens up new possibilities for engaging in public conversations and connecting with communities. While it shares some similarities with Twitter, Threads offers its own unique features and integration potential within the Fediverse. So, download Threads, explore its functionalities, and join the conversation today!
